Wanted: Special Educators to Complete Assessments for a National Study
The U.S. Department of Education’s Institute on Educational Sciences has provided funding to Queens College (New York), Illinois State University, and the University of Kansas to collect data on a standardization sample to establish norms for the Supports Intensity Scale-Children’s Version (SIS-C) Special education teachers and related services professionals (e.g., school psychologists, school social workers) are needed to complete assessments on children with intellectual disability and related developmental disabilities (ages 5-15).
What: Complete the Supports Intensity Scale-Children’s Version, a scale that is designed to measure the extent of extra support needed by children with intellectual disability in the home, school, and community.
How: Watch an archived webinar at http://www.aaidd.org/content_8931.cfm that provides detailed instructions on how to complete the assessment and enter data. Parents must provide permission in order for their children to be assessed. Educators enter data online. All data are anonymous (there will be no identifying data entered into the data set). The assessment protocol, permission forms, and instructions are provided at the website.
Things to know:
· Completing the assessment may help an educator gain a different perspective and a better understanding of his or her students.
· Completed assessments can be printed and used for planning purposes.
· The data collected will help expand the knowledge base in the field of special education.
· The scale is completed through a structured interview that usually takes about an hour.
· Queens College can pay educators a stipend of $50 USD per protocol completed. Arrangements can also be made to send funds to school districts.
